Rue Mouffetard 1969
One of Paris’ oldest streets traced onto an earlier Roman road it dates back to the 3rd century AD when the old Roman town on the left bank was being abandoned in favour of the safer, fortified smaller location on the île de la Cité.
The road falls away on the south side of the Sainte-Genevieve hill. Its name could come from a corruption of the place name, Mont Cétard, to Mont Fétard and eventually becoming Mouffetard. Alternatively, the old French word ‘moufette‘ used to mean an awful smell, and it could be that this is its origin.

The Kinkster is dead, long live the Kinkster!
Say Kaddish for Richard Samet Friedman, singer/songwriter, author, humorist and mensch. Founder of Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys he composed and sang THEY AIN'T MAKING JEWS LIKE JESUS ANYMORE and RIDE EM JEWBOY, a parable of the Holocaust sung here by his fellow chess player, Willie Nelson. It is alleged that Janet Suzman smuggled into his Robben Island cell where it became his favorite song.
And when he couldn't take it anymore he ran for Governor of Texas and lost to Rick Perry. We could use him now!
And just in case you misunderstand or under appreciate him watch the interview below originally recorded in 2012 for the BBC. It could have been recorded just after the Presidential debate last Thursday.

Paris au Flaneur
I invite you to join me for a Paris walking tour au flaneur as we wend our way from one side of Seine beginning with a discussion of the importance of the café in Parisian life and the luminaries like Sartre, de Beauvoir, Camus, Juliette Greco and Miles Davis who filled them to the other, pausing to enjoy the obvious (the Louvre) and the slightly hidden (Galerie Vivenne.)
I am a reader of the Paris Insider and prior to the Martin Walker tour in April, my friend, Ellen, and I did the flaneur tour with Terrance. We met him at Las Deux Magots and spent a lovely day walking around Paris, seeing areas we would not have visited on our own. We particularly enjoyed lunch at one of his favorite cafes and seeing the beautiful Galerie Vivienne. Terrance is one of the most widely read individuals I have ever met. His wealth of information is incredible as attested to in his newsletter. It was a delight to meet him and see parts of Paris through his eyes.Melanie --Chicago
