Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867), made nature his main motif, his world and his refuge. As the leader of the colony of artists who frequented the village of Barbizon and the forest of Fontainebleau, he spent long hours wandering the forest alone, sketching on the spot before producing his final works in his studio.
Both a romantic and a realist, Rousseau aspired to capture the harmony of the world, by mixing his soul with it.

And thank you again for bringing such a great film to our attention, we really enjoyed it.
You asked for comments. I'll ask JL to send something but here are my thoughts:
The film was unique for the incredible beauty of Sergent's work, and for how it combined art, fashion, sociology, history & biography to put it all in context. It was fascinating to learn not just about Sergent's life, but also those of his subjects. We're all familiar with Madame X, but who knew about her use of cosmetics and how they influenced her portrait. Or that the artist who made some of the best society portraits ever painted also created something as gut-wrenching as Gassed. Special mention for those interviewed - not just for their expertise, but also for the range of British accents which was almost a study in itself :-)
A bientôt,
