There was a wave of Italian immigration to France that brought many artisan craftsman to add artistic touches to Haussmanian construction. It also brought performers who have become so much a part of French cinematic culture that we almost forget that they are Italian.
Above is the young Ivor Levi who became the singer/actor Yves Montand. Others included the former wrestler Lino Ventura and the singer Serge Reggianni.
THE WAGES OF FEAR
In a decrepit South American village, four men are hired to transport an urgent nitroglycerine shipment without the equipment that would make it safe.
Based on George Arnaud's novel it stars Yves Montand and Vera Clozout, the beautiful wife of director Her-Georges Clouzot.
Casque d'Or
Three gangsters and an ex-con carpenter all fall for the beautiful golden-haired woman in Belle Époque France.
Starring Simone Signoret and Serge Reggiani.
Touchez pas au Grisbi
An aging, world-weary gangster is double-crossed and forced out of retirement when his best friend is kidnapped and their stash of eight stolen gold bars demanded as ransom. Featuring Lino Ventura in the debut role that was to establish the template for his career as a street wise gangster or cop-is there a difference?
A bonus is a cameo by the young Jeanne Moreau.

I remember seeing Fellini's 8-1/2, and being so blown away by it that the boy I went with and I sat through a second showing. Helen Noakes, San Francisco, CA
