Cezanne in Aix 2025
Paul Cezanne 1839-1906 at the brocante in Aix-en-Provence
This native son is being celebrated in Aix in 2025 as 100 of his works will be on display at the Musée Granet from June 28-Oct 12. Since only 10 are on permanent display 90 have been gathered from collectors and museums like the Orsay.
Renovations are being completed on the family home Jas de Bouffan where they lived for 40 years, between 1859 and 1899. Every stage of Paul Cezanne’s life as an artist played out within its walls. The manor house was where he became an artist and was the main inspiration behind his work. He blossomed from the paintings of his youth into the 12 pieces he painted straight onto the walls in the "Grand Salon".
2025 will also see the reopening of Cezanne's studio, another key site for the artist.
Cezanne himself designed his last studio which was built by Les Lauves hill in 1901. John Rewald had the Cezanne Memorial Committee buy Cezanne's studio in 1954. It was gifted to Aix- Marseille University the same year and opened to the public as a museum on July 8th 1954.
Following a 2-year renovation, it will reopen to the general public in 2025 to provide a new visitor experience exploring the paintings Cezanne did here in the last four years of his life. The garden's renovation will restore it to how it was when the artist lived here and the entire wing that Cezanne built will be turned into a museum.
Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence brings you the international Cezanne au Jas de Bouffan exhibition from June 28th to October 12th 2025. Jas de Bouffan is more than a home; it’s an artistic laboratory where Cezanne experimented with his work for almost 40 years. The retrospective’s outstanding selection of a hundred paintings, drawings and watercolours takes you on a deep dive into the artist’s private life and reveals his close bond with the family home.
